Sample This!
Starts September 08
SAMPLE THIS! Is a great new music project by the Scottish Music Centre, funded by Youth Music Initiative, offering a cutting-edge evening course to 14-25 year olds.
The tutors had noticed that through teaching informal music education it was clear that there was a knowledge gap in live instrumental tuition and basic music theory/musicality, Sample This aimed to challenge that by giving the participants the chance to learn the basic theory behind each instrument from percussion & drums, guitar and bass guitar to keyboards and voice.
Based in state-of-the-art facilities at Glasgow's City Halls, the course will teach individuals how to play and record live instruments then create their own loops and their own sound library.
Education officer Keith Beattie says "Its all going great so far, I'm looking forward to seeing the results from all the recordings and what each of the guys will do with the samples they create."

Outcomes/Impact
So far the project has been proving to give the participants a real thirst for learning live instruments and should give them a huge bank of sounds to use when composing the tracks using the sample library.
On a personal level its clear that the participants are really interested and keen to move into different musical directions, opening their ears and eyes to the many diverse sides of music that are more easily available to them.

I really love playing the live instruments – it's a real change from using beats that have been programmed into a pc, I prefer working with the live percussion
