The BBC SSO and Principal Guest Conductor Ilan Volkov have a glowing reputation for their interpretations of music by Stravinsky; they conclude this short season of Afternoon Performance concerts with an all Stravinsky programme. Leading Scottish pianist Steven Osborne gives a rare performance of Capriccio, the piano concerto which Stravinsky wrote for himself to play. The bubbling, rhythmic energy of the Concerto for piano and wind contrasts well with Stravinsky's orchestration of a waltz by Chopin, and the programme also includes the composer's neo-classical string concerto.

Every year, music students at the University of Glasgow are given the opportunity to form a contemporary music ensemble. The ensemble, which meets weekly and which puts on two concerts a year, is a space where students can develop the skills and understanding needed to tackle experimental music. Improvisation, extended instrumental/vocal techniques, and ways of reading graphic and verbal notations are central to the ensemble's work.

As well as scores by Christian Wolff, Terry Riley and John Cage, the CME have also produced and performed works composed by the ensemble itself.

This year the CME sessions have been led by composer/improviser Charles Ross.

As part of the 75th birthday celebrations for Philip Glass, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra gives the UK Premiere of the composer's Sixth Symphony, an impassioned setting of Allen Ginsberg's protest poem, Plutonian Ode, an outcry against nuclear contamination and pollution.

The symphony follows an arc from outrage and condemnation to spiritual and personal transformation. Conducted by Nicholas Collon, Principal Conductor of the Aurora Orchestra, it is preceded by Richard Strauss's epic tone-poem of decay and rebirth, Death and Transfiguration.

Last season Svend Brown introduced a major Minimalism strand to Glasgow Music's programming, and this season MINIMAL returns to celebrate a very special occasion - the 75th birthday of one of the genre's founding fathers, Philip Glass. Glasgow Music will devote two mini-festivals to his work - MINIMAL: Glass At 75 (Part I) in October 2011 and MINIMAL: Glass At 75 (Part II) in May 2012, the latter of which featuring two performances by the hugely influential composer and musician.

An unmissable treat for lovers of classic films and classic scores: tonight Glass will appear with the Kronos Quartet for a performance of his own score for Dracula, the classic Universal Pictures 1931 horror film starring Béla Lugosi. Glass's score is the first ever written for the film, of which the composer himself is a big fan.

Schoenberg and his followers actually never set out to be revolutionaries - and even at its most radical, their music was charged with all the emotion of their Romantic heroes. Anton Webern pays gentle homage to Schubert, and from his American exile, Arnold Schoenberg channels Brahms and the Baroque into a surprisingly lyrical Violin Concerto (a glorious vehicle for the masterly Ilya Gringolts). In another world, his Five Pieces had distilled deep feeling into breathtaking orchestral sound - and Alban Berg's Lyric Suite had used Schoenberg's theories to write some of the most breathlessly passionate love letters in all 20th century music.

Hebrides Ensemble with guest soloist. The musical equivalent of a Klimt or Kokoschka, poetry and music from Berlin's golden age, a nightmare cabaret, a moonlit fantasy - Schoenberg's masterpiece was first performed 100 years ago. There is nothing like it: it is like a necklace of fabulous, glittering miniatures, each a world in itself but building - over the course of around
45 minutes - to create a shattering theatrical effect.

BBC SSO Concerts The New Century 3

"The best music always results from ecstasies of logic," said Alban Berg. But he proved, time and again, that the music of the Second Viennese School could do infinitely more than that. Ilan Volkov conducts as violinist Ilya Gringolts and Nicolas Hodges - arguably the finest living champion of contemporary piano music - join 13 handpicked BBC SSO players on the impassioned pilgrimage of Berg's extraordinary Chamber Concerto. First, though, the full orchestra explores
the ravishing, crystalline sound-world of Webern's Six Orchestral Pieces - music that Stravinsky compared to diamonds - and lays bare the sensuous and deeply
romantic roots of Webern's creative vision in the exquisite Im Sommerwind.

Marking half a century of Scottish Opera, this celebratory concert takes place on the 50th anniversary of the Company's first performance in 1962.

Though different in style, 'Cav and Pag' have been performed together since the end of the 19th century, their common setting in the heat of Southern Italy the perfect backdrop for shared themes of love, adultery and revenge. With rich melodies, energy and pulsing passion, their scores evoke the harsh romance of Sicilian and Calabrian life so effectively that they became the soundtrack to a generation of 'Mafioso' films, including The Godfather Trilogy and Scorsese's Raging Bull.

Casts include: Francesco Anile, Stephen Chaundy, Antonia Cifrone, Louise Collett, Leah-Marian Jones, Thomas Oliemans and Gabriele Spina.

Conducted by Scottish Opera Music Director Francesco Corti

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Discovering Music: - 'Pictures at an Exhibition'

Following the death of his close friend, Victor Hartmann in 1873, Musorsgky attended an exhibition of his work and was inspired to compose a piano suite depicting some of the paintings, drawings and designs that he had seen. The suite became a potent example of his Russian nationalist sentiments and his desire to 'realistically' capture pictorial ideas in music. It cried out to be arranged for orchestra, and one who took up the challenge was Ravel, who made his remarkable orchestration in 1922. Ravel's spectacular scoring of Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition comes under Stephen Johnson's spotlight, and the BBC SSO gives a complete performance.

A rare Scottish appearance from the Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird to celebrate the release of his much anticipated new album, Break It Yourself. With his 2005 record Mysterious Production of Eggs recently named one of the '100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time' on Amazon.com, now get ready for this casual musical genius' first studio effort in over two years.

Renowned for his jaw dropping live shows, you can close your eyes and you would think there were six musicians up on stage. Classically trained, he started playing the violin when he was four and his work was first acclaimed in the concert setting by the curious attraction of one man generating the wealth of sound normally produced by an orchestra, seemingly composing, or at least structuring the songs. Passages of violin, guitar, voice and glockenspiel are looped and layered forging a texture of definitive hooks and rhythms out of spontaneous stabs and strums.

***** "Break It Yourself is an album of the sea, of shifting sands and surging waves, sparkling spray and soft, contemplative calm." The Guardian

Supporting will be exciting new Scottish talent Rachel Sermanni. The Carrbridge singer-songwriter has made appearances with Mumford & Sons, Newton Faulkner and Elvis Costello and her recent New Voices commission at Celtic Connections gained numerous five star reviews.

One of the world's top saxophonists, Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Pharoah Sanders made his name with the expressionistic free jazz of John Coltrane's ensembles of the mid 60s, playing with passion and intensity on such seminal albums as Ascension and Meditations. Since them Sanders has played in a variety of contexts from free to mainstream and some of his best work is his most accessible. "...it was a privilege to sit among over one thousand people and witness a true Great of 20th Century jazz recalling with such raucous gusto a heritage forged in the post-bop furnaces of the 1960s" Jazz Times, 2011

Das Kapital - Edward Perraud (Drums), Hasse Poulsen (Guitar), Daniel Erdmann (Tenorsax) - have released two award-winning albums, which explore and re-interpret the music of Schoenberg disciple, Brecht collaborator and composer of the GDR national anthem Hanns Eisler. An inspiring set of idealist music from three fearless musicians who are not shy to suggest that the role of artists is as subversive agents against any powerful ideology, regime or convention. (Eyal Hareuveni, All About Jazz, 2011). A masterpiece of artistic empathy, edgy, irreverent and exciting. (German Music Critics award 2011)

The Neil Cowley Trio is not your typical jazz trio. A dazzling composer, pianist Cowley creates deeply engaging, and dynamic music that journeys between poetic and poignant, pomp and splendour to powerful rip-roaring riffs. It is instrumental music that references Debussy and Steve Reich as much as Spiritualized and Arcade Fire, and is powerful enough to break down standard perceptions of genre. It's sheer emotion and energy touch lovers of all music.

On a darkening sea, a lone ship carries a strange cargo: a dutiful knight, an unwilling bride, and between them - though no-one yet knows it - a love more powerful than life itself. Wagner's Tristan und Isolde is the ultimate love story, set to a score so passionate that it changed music forever. BBC SSO Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles is known the world over as a leading Wagner conductor; now, as we approach the composer's bicentenary year, he's assembled an international world-class cast to begin a three-part voyage towards supreme bliss. Rachmaninov's Wagner-inspired tone poem sets the mood; climb aboard for one of the greatest experiences in all opera.

Opening the 2010 SCO Season with a thrilling Don Giovanni, Robin Ticciati set some kind of a precedent! Now he follows it with Mozart's sharp, dark, sexy comedy of young love betrayed: two men are tempted to test their lovers through a cruel deception, then pay the price in heartache and sorrow when the women fall into the trap. It's a heart-wrenching tale which inspired great operatic writing from Mozart; sublime moments such as the trio Soave sia il vento and great arias including Un aura amoroso. Ticciati is joined by a brilliant cast of singers: just what you would expect from a conductor who is the toast of the operatic as well as the orchestral world.

Time to celebrate! Glinka's Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla has been called a musical firecracker - so what better way to launch Peter Oundjian's very first concert as RSNO Music Director? That's just the start of this thrilling all-Russian programme, which sweeps from the heart-melting song of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto - played by the superb Vadim Gluzman - to the revolutionary fervour of Shostakovich's mighty Eleventh Symphony.

One of Scotland's best loved acts is set to return for a string of shows which will see them mark 25 years since the release of their debut album 'Raintown'.

With their name being inspired by a Steely Dan song and their music influenced by the artfulness of Bruce Springsteen channeled through a distinctly Scottish upbringing, Deacon Blue have proved themselves to be one of the most successful acts ever to have emerged from Glasgow. Upon its initial release, Raintown was met with great critical success. When the album was released it entered the chart at number one, displacing a certain American singer by the name of Madonna and her album Like a Prayer. This year Deacon Blue celebrate their 25th anniversary they reunite to work on original material for a new studio album, set for release in September alongside a re-release campaign of their entire catalogue.

Daniel's shows are renowned for their sheer professionalism and entertainment value. Few artists, if any, give more to their fans in a live concert situation than Daniel O'Donnell.

Don't miss this chance to see just why Daniel has become such a sought after and legendary entertainer.

As a former music director of Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, Alexander Vedernikov's credentials in Russian repertoire hardly need stating. So expect a special level of emotional commitment in Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony. And expect an unmistakably eastern-European angle on the two masterpieces that open Muzyka Polska, our celebration of the music of Poland. Chopin's First Concerto is an established favourite, though surely no soloist could bring more freshness and poetry to it than Angela Hewitt. Szymanowski's early Concert Overture, meanwhile, is a rarity in the concert hall - though you'll wonder why, when you hear this sumptuous homage to Richard Strauss from a composer dizzy with his own youthful genius.

Musically, the 19th century was a golden era. To this day, its music brings the age of Romanticism alive: that time of sweeping change, war, revolution and passion is celebrated in this concert. Berlioz wrote King Lear a year after his Symphonie Fantastique: it is easily as vivid and dramatic, full of grand-guignol tumult, but pathos and tragedy too. It makes a powerful complement to Beethoven's 'Eroica' Symphony, which Ticciati conducts for the first time in Scotland. Don't miss the SCO Season debut of the young German violinist Veronika Eberle: currently a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, she inspires reviews extolling her 'star quality' and 'electrifying' performances.

Pure romance: Johannes Brahms battled public anticipation and personal tragedy to complete his First Symphony, finally producing one of the most glorious triumphs in all music. Rachmaninov's Rhapsody, meanwhile, crowns a display of keyboard fireworks with one of the most passionate love-themes ever written. It's heady stuff: the stunning young pianist Natasha Paremski provides the sparkle, while Peter Oundjian and the full RSNO unleash the emotion. Britten's bracing Sea Interludes open the floodgates.

No British composer was better equipped to write a 'pastoral' symphony than Ralph Vaughan Williams - or so you'd think. But Vaughan Williams's Third was conceived to the sound of a bugle call on the Western Front, and its haunted fields are those of Flanders, not Gloucestershire. Associate Guest Conductor Andrew Manze reaches the next landmark in his Vaughan Williams cycle, and introduces Grazyna Bacewicz's bracing Concerto for String Orchestra of 1948, a burst of neo-classical energy from a troubled era. Beethoven ties the two together: Steven Osborne's profound musical intelligence should uncover new depths as he embarks on a cycle of the composer's piano concertos, beginning with the most personal - and enigmatic - of the works

Swensen and Kirshbaum - two long-time SCO favourites - return for a delightful evening of music-making. Kirshbaum first recorded the Barber concerto with the SCO back in the 1980s, and it is still one of the top recommended recordings. It has plenty of Barber's warm mellow lyricism about it, but a good bit of spark and punch too. Schumann's 'Rhenish' was actually his last symphony. It is often mentioned in the same breath as Beethoven's Fifth and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Come expecting heroics and full-blooded Romanticism, delivered with Swensen's signature passion and sweep.

In Act II of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, the summer night itself seems to shimmer with emotion, as the two lovers consummate their passion beneath a canopy of stars. Yet treachery hides in the shadows, and Wagner follows his greatest love scene with some of the most tragic music he ever wrote. Join Donald Runnicles and a superb international cast as the BBC SSO dives deep into the glowing heart of Wagner's epic love story. And hear, too, excerpts from the work that some think gave Wagner his inspiration: Hector Berlioz's scarcely less extraordinary Roméo et Juliette.

Enter a vastly different world with Carl Orff's roof-raising masterpiece Carmina Burana. Magical powers, extraordinary sounds, those implacably pounding rhythms - it all explodes into multi-coloured life with the massed RSNO choruses under the baton of Peter Oundjian. First though, give in to the seductive sleaze of Thomas Adès' tabloid opera - and get your breath back with the timeless serenity of Vaughan Williams' rapturous Tallis Fantasia.

They play songs by The Bonzos Jake Thackeray, Syd Barret, George Formby, They Might Be Giants, Ian Dury, Mel Brooks, The Mighty Sparrow and many of their very own brand spanking new compositions. During the winter of 2010/2011 they held a raucous 8 week residency at The Wilmington Arms in Clerkenwell. Famously advertised as 'Live Rehearsals' the shows were a heady mixture of excitement and catastrophe, at once fabulously warm, surprising and hilarious. They have done something similar this year at Monto Water Rats, where they found that actually, they weren't half bad so they've booked a few more shows and thought they might even bang a few festival performances out this summer.

Ade Edmondson (Young Ones, Comic Strip, Bottom, etc) Guitar,
banjo, trumpet, mandolin, fiddle, coconuts.
Neil Innes (Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Monty Python, Innes Book Of Records, etc) Keyboards, guitar, ukulele.
Phill Jupitus (Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Q1, Radio 6 DJ ,etc) Guitar, bass, kazoo, triangle.
Rowland Rivron (Raw Sex, Jools Holland Big Band, Blue Peter (aged 15), etc) Drums, congas, bongos, rude shouting.

His career spans an amazing 40 years, and includes over 30 recorded releases, whilst his live performances have run the gamut from small folk clubs in Ireland and England to premier concert halls throughout the world.

We're delighted to welcome him back to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, along with his long-term collaborator and sometime producer Declan Sinnott.

Constant touring with her band has created a magical organic chemistry between Eddi and her players. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute and pragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary British music.
They called them "Young Poland": the composers who, in the first decades of the 20th century, gave voice to a resurgent nation. Kar?owicz died young, but his heartfelt tone-poem Eternal Songsght Polish music firmly into the world of Mahler and Strauss. Szymanowski went further in his Violin Concerto No.1: lyrical, visionary and aglow with colour, it's a work with which Nicola Benedetti has a deep personal affinity. Andrew Litton makes a welcome return to the BBC SSO, and reminds us of another turning point in Eastern European history: Prokofiev's "symphony of the greatness of the human spirit", premiered in wartime Moscow to the sound of gunfire.

The five singers, who have learned their craft through years of performing together, stage a pitch perfect show. The amazing audience reaction every night also provided the band with many personal highlights including the tangible frisson of anticipation in the opening sequence, hearing a packed house sing along to their own songs, seeing the aisles of a concert hall become a dance floor, returning to the stage in Glasgow wearing kilts, and even dodging a shower of bras!

There is certainly no shortage of contrast here. The Four Serious Songs are among Brahms' most profound and personal works - deeply meditative music. They are performed here with his frothy and whimsical Liebeslieder Walzer - pop music of the highest quality. Schumann, who was a close friend to Brahms, is also heard in dramatically different modes - the Overture, Scherzo and Finale is sheer extrovert showmanship, while the Nachtlied brings the evening to a beautifully serene close.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Season 12/13 Pizarro plays Beethoven

Charismatic Finn John Storgårds returns to the SCO with a new work from his famous countryman, Einojuhani Rautavaara, and Mendelssohn's majestic 'Reformation' Symphony. It was written to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession - the statement of Lutheran beliefs and practices presented to the Emperor Charles V in 1530; Mendelssohn captures the mystery and awe of the revelation, but also the fire and drama of Luther's story. Pizarro's performances of Beethoven have been described as
an 'unalloyed delight'. Not to be missed.

Bartók and Hindemith both liked to present an austere face to the world. History, though, had different ideas. Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin scandalised inter-war Hungary, and his riotous First Piano Concerto left audiences reeling. Hindemith, meanwhile, found himself writing a heartfelt elegy for King George V and a baton-twirling showstopper for the wartime US audience (even if he did call it "Symphonic Metamorphosis"). Martyn Brabbins conducts a programme that startles one moment, and charms the next with the inimitable Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen and the BBC SSO's superb principal viola, Scott Dickinson.

A perfect curtain-raiser to the festive season. High spirits, brilliant comedy and jaw-dropping virtuosity are the essence of Weber's concertos: a man of the theatre, he certainly knew how to entertain and thrill. Beethoven had no time at all for him, but had to eat his words when Weber wrote the most successful and influential opera of the decade. Egmont belongs to an utterly different kind of Romanticism: dark, heroic and stormy.

Winter warmers: Tchaikovsky was a nervous soul, and he was modest about his First Symphony. But audiences for over a century have fallen head-over-heels for its wintry sparkle and youthful freshness. The RSNO's charismatic Assistant Conductor continues his love affair with the music of the north as keyboard legend John Lill plays Grieg's hugely popular concerto. And if you enjoy Scandinavian TV drama, you'll be charmed by the unmistakably Swedish style of Lars-Erik Larsson's tuneful homage to Shakespeare.

Begin 2013 in the company of two brilliant and charismatic young artists. David Afkham's awards, prizes and plaudits make impressive reading: he has captured the attention of musicians and public alike, and makes his SCO debut with a typically ambitious bill. Schubert's 'Great C major' is not for the faint-hearted; for most of the 19th century it was considered unperformable. Now a firmly established favourite, it remains an epic musical journey. Piemontesi returns to the SCO, a pianist as charming as he is formidable.

Karol Szymanowski and Witold Lutos?awski: two very different visionaries, who between them lit up Poland's dark 20th century. Lutos?awski's Concerto for Orchestra brought a modernist energy to the Polish folk tradition; three decades later, his luminous Fourth Symphony reaffirmed his status as one of post-war music's most compelling voices. Szymanowski, meanwhile, channelled his repressed sensuality into a pair of ravishing song-cycles. Escapism, perhaps, but all the more beautiful for it, so expect a blaze of colour from Ilan Volkov who joins forces with one of Szymanowski's most admired living interpreters.

Between classics by Schubert and Beethoven, SCO Associate Artist Richard Egarr introduces one of their contemporaries who deserves to be far better known. Dussek certainly had a colourful life: his brilliance as pianist and composer won him the favour of Catherine the Great of Russia and Napoleon Bonaparte among others. It also won him favours of another kind, and he had to flee several countries with angry husbands on his heels. He left eighteen captivating and unusual piano concertos - hugely enjoyable to listen to, and fascinating for us looking back to that time because, in them, you can so clearly hear the future - the piano styles of Liszt, Chopin and Schumann.

Now established as an exceptionally fine conductor, Andrew Manze is a musician of great range and curiosity. In this programme, he typically takes a familiar work - in this case Beethoven's First Symphony - and gives it an intriguing context: Mendelssohn is in very Beethovenian form in the little known overture and Schumann meltingly Romantic in the Cello Concerto. Rolf Martinsson's reflection on Schoenberg's ultra-Romantic Verklärte Nacht may last only ten minutes, but it makes a powerful, memorable impression, paving the way for the youthful blaze of Beethoven's symphony.

Seville-born Joaquin Turina simply had to look around him to find inspiration for his Danzas Fantásticas and Maurice Ravel drew on Mozart, jazz, and the spirit of his ancestral País Vasco to create his unique piano concerto.
A solo cello poses the question. The answer? Dance; whether the joyous whirl of Berlioz's take on Weber, or the astonishing creative flights of Lutostawski's masterly concerto. Nothing seems to liberate creative energy quite so explosively, from the swinging hedonism of Strauss's champagne operetta to the headlong rhythmic verve of Beethoven's barnstorming Seventh Symphony - the work that prompted even Richard Wagner to get on his toes. As a composer himself, BBC SSO Artist-in-Association Matthias Pintscher understands the power of rhythm; his partnership with a soloist as brilliantly inventive as Johannes Moser should strike dazzling sonic sparks.

RSNO Season 2012/13 Beethoven's Eroica

Poet, revolutionary, hero: Ludwig van Beethoven changed the history of music. Tonight, guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk and virtuoso pianist Rudolf Buchbinder take us on an incredible journey through a turbulent age; from the stirring Leonore Overture No3 to the epic adventure of Beethoven's "Heroic" Symphony - inspired by Napoleon, but dedicated to the cause of freedom. In between comes Beethoven's darkest piano concerto, a moving reminder of the deeply romantic spirit behind that unstoppable energy.

To get the utmost out of Robin Ticciati's concerts this week and next, try to come to them both. As ever he is thoughtful and deep, taking the SCO into new realms. Across both concerts there is a sense of continuity and tradition with Vienna at its heart: the magnificent, musical city that was home to so many of these composers. Mahler loved Schubert, and Ticciati pairs their Fifth Symphonies. Webern pays
tribute to Bach and Matthias Goerne, one of today's finest exponents of lieder, performs Schubert songs orchestrated by Webern, Brahms and Reger.

Arrivals and departures: the teenage Chopin wrote his Second Piano Concerto just months before leaving Poland forever, yet its music is already drenched in the poetry that would make him famous. Anton Bruckner, meanwhile, hoped that his Second Symphony would be his passport into the Viennese musical elite - only to have it dismissed as "unplayable" by the Vienna Philharmonic. Hindsight offers perspective: tonight, former Chopin Competition winner Garrick Ohlsson brings a lifetime's devotion to bear on this latest instalment in our Muzyka Polska series, while Thomas Dausgaard has won critical acclaim for his fresh approach to Bruckner's profoundly Romantic early symphony.

"The most personal utterance among Mahler's creations, and perhaps in all music..." The view of Mahler's friend, the conductor Bruno Walter, who gave the premiere in 1911 and lived to conduct Das Lied at the very first Edinburgh Festival in 1947. Inspired by Chinese poetry, the music veers between earthly passions and eternal longings, ultimately dissolving into sublime nothingness. This acclaimed new chamber orchestra version was premiered at the BBC Proms. Ticciati has preceded it, playfully enough, with perhaps Haydn's most theatrical and mad - literally mad - symphony.

Tchaikovsky didn't just identify with him, he poured all his passion into this tremendous Manfred Symphony: sixty minutes of sweeping tunes, heart-pounding drama, and raw emotion. If you don't know it, there's no better guide than RSNO legend Neeme Järvi - just as no pianist plays Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto with more flair than the incomparable Nikolai Lugansky.
Betrayed and alone, Tristan lies wounded in his castle of Kareol. As his strength ebbs, he sees fantastic visions and dreams that the love of his Isolde might still redeem him. And so it will: but in a way more terrible, and more beautiful, than either of them had imagined. In the final act of Tristan, Donald Runnicles, the BBC SSO and some of the finest Wagner singers of our time tackle music that verges on the transcendent - though not before we've confronted the darkest implications of Wagner's world-changing vision, in Richard Strauss's wordless war-requiem for strings, Metamorphosen.

In the enviable position of writing most of his music for musicians that he knew well, Haydn peppered his work with wonderful solos - his Sinfonia Concertante is awash in them, offering select principals of the SCO a chance to shine. Janiczek has built a fascinating programme around it, with two short pieces from the 20th century; Strauss' moonlit sextet is as expansive as Webern's Five Pieces are tiny and dense.
"I need the sound of the trampling of steel-shod boots", Shostakovich told the first performers of his Ninth Symphony - but this startlingly irreverent "pseudo-comedy" certainly wasn't the victory march the Soviet authorities were expecting, any more than Britten's passionately anti-war Sinfonia da Requiem was what its Imperial Japanese commissioners had ordered. This thought-provoking programme from Donald Runnicles opens in a different world: it took a composer of supreme confidence to write Rachmaninov's sweeping Third Piano Concerto, and it takes a pianist of unparalleled gifts to make it soar.

2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, arguably the greatest and most successful British composer of the past century. The SCO has its own long and distinguished history of performing his music in the opera house as well as in concert. This week and next it features Britten in two very different contexts. Richard Egarr pairs him with the composer he treasured most: Henry Purcell. Two centuries separate them, but Britten loved - and learned from - the way Purcell set the English language to music. This lovely sequence of works by both men gives plenty of chances to relish them at their considerable best.

Britten was a powerful, Janus-like figure musically, always looking both to the past and the future. This concert celebrates that aspect of the great man by arriving at Mozart's mighty 40th Symphony by way of two composers who have been associated with Britten's Festival in Aldeburgh. Birtwistle's brief Carmen arcadiae presents an intense, dramatic and punchy opening; and Britten surely would have admired Suckling's absorbing and ambitious storm, rose, tiger. At the heart of the evening stands one of the greatest poetic masterpieces of all time; Britten's own selection of verse on the theme of night and sleep, which he set with unforgettable brilliance. John Mark Ainsley, as fine an interpreter as you will find, is partnered by the SCO's virtuoso Principal Horn, Alec Frank-Gemmill.

Few composers were more aware than Ralph Vaughan Williams of what it meant to write a Ninth Symphony - and few have been less daunted. The composer may have been 85 years old, but 1950s audiences heard a symphony of astonishing power, ambition and imaginative fire: a contemporary prophet looking forward, not back. It's a strikingly equal match for Beethoven's mighty 'Emperor' concerto, as Steven Osborne and Andrew Manze tackle two of the pinnacles of our Beethoven concerto and Vaughan Williams symphony cycles. And for once, Richard Wagner doesn't quite steal the show, though his visionary Lohengrin prelude burns with the same inner light.

Mozart in 1784 and Schubert in 1814/15 - great years for great composers. Mozart was at the height of his popularity in Vienna, writing a stream of new works to perform at his very own showcase concerts. Schubert found his voice in 1814/15 in masterpieces such as Gretchen am Spinnrade; his second symphony has all the best qualities of youth. Maybe the famous opening-night punch-up has been exaggerated.
"Is not His word like a fire?" Felix Mendelssohn may have been a friend of Queen Victoria, but there's absolutely nothing stuffy about his Elijah. This is religious music with a wonderful difference: a rip-roaring Old Testament epic full of blood, thunder and fabulously hummable tunes. We welcome back conductor Sir Andrew Davis, the RSNO Chorus and Junior Chorus, and an all-star team of soloists for what should be a truly roof-raising night to remember.

RSNO Season 2012/13 Dvorák Cello Concerto

"What a symphony that would make!" declared Antonín Dvorák when he saw the Niagara Falls. But he didn't write a symphony: he wrote the most sweepingly romantic cello concerto of all time. The superb Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk throws himself headlong into its torrents tonight, while conductor Thomas Søndergård and the RSNO let loose a volley of musical fireworks with Stravinsky's Petrouchka - a riotous story of old Russia, with an unforgettable sting in its tail.

Laurence Olivier's wartime film of Shakespeare's Henry V is a true classic of British cinema - and William Walton's stirring score is quite simply one of the greatest of all time. Peter Oundjian, the massed RSNO choruses and a special guest narrator all come together to end the Season in truly spectacular fashion - and welcome Scotland's favourite violinist, Nicola Benedetti in two all-time favourites from opposite sides of the Channel. "We few, we happy few" - make sure you're amongst them!
