Projects
City Halls Fusion
March 2005 - June 2006
The Fusion Project made of use of City Halls' high-tech education facilities to give young people, aged 14 - 25 and drawn from a diverse range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, the opportunity to develop new creative music skills using technologies. Participants met three times a week to explore DJ-ing, beat-making, recording, mixing and mastering in a highly supported and sociable environment. The project involved two trainee Music Leaders and also provided continued professional development opportunities for the Project Leader. There were regular opportunities for the young people to perform their original work and work alongside industry professionals.
Partners
Glasgow's Concert Halls designed, managed and delivered the project and worked closely with Culture and Sport Glasgow, Glasgow Youth Services and Community Action Teams around Glasgow to signpost young people on to the project.
Outcomes/Impact
Participants have learned new musical skills whilst pursuing their own ideas and interests. Many of the participants have produced their own original work. Their confidence has been enhanced and the project has brought together young people from a range of diverse backgrounds therefore promoting inclusion and breaking down barriers to participation. One participant has already turned his "hobby" into part-time paid employment.
Many of the participants have taken up new participatory opportunities within the City Halls Learning programme.
The skills of the Music Leaders involved have been advanced through continued professional development opportunities thus improving future practice and developing leadership capacity.
Quotes
The organisation and facilities were top class, and the attitude both towards and reciprocated by the guys taking part was fantastic.
Darren Cunningham, guest DJ during three-day Fusion residency, April 2007.
I met a friend who introduced me to the project and from that day I have never looked back... Fusion has made me a better DJ and through this connection I have managed to secure a Friday night residency with Bar Buddha. Fusion project is the backbone of what I am today and I will tell the world out there about it!
