Discover what happens to Icarus, a young lad on an epic space voyage. He spots a black hole outside the spaceship and goes to explore – and the worst happens when he is sucked towards it. But that’s just the start of his adventure; Icarus survives, but when tries to return to the spaceship in what he believes to be a few minutes after leaving it, he gradually realises that many thousands of years have passed…

about the performance

Take your children on a breathtaking journey through space with Philip Glass’s first ever work for family audiences. He joins forces with celebrated physicist and children’s author Brian Greene to create an eyepopping trip into deep space as we follow the fortunes of young Icarus – the astronaut who flew too close to a black hole. Watch the tale unfold as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s spectacular playing dances, thunders and swoops around you with a cutting edge film by Al and Al transporting you deep into space with spectacular Hubble telescope inspired visuals.

No kids? No problem!

You can still enjoy a performance of Philip Glass’s new work (and the spectacular Al+Al film) this time preceded by three of Steve Reich’s most entertaining and diverting works: Electric Counterpoint, Vermont Counterpoint and Violin Phase. In each piece Reich writes for a virtuoso soloist, accompanied by him or herself multi-tracked to create a dazzling ensemble. For this performance we’ve commissioned cutting edge visuals from to complete the trip.
