Music For Early Ears

April 2006 - April 2008

Working with 18 Glasgow nursery schools over a two year period, The Music For Early Ears project aimed to increase opportunities for children aged 0-5 to engage in high quality creative music activities. The project, funded by the Youth Music Initiative, also supported the professional development of early years staff and 8 trainee music leaders with regular training opportunities, practical experience of delivering musical activities and through the production of complementary teaching resources. Weekly parent/carer and child music workshops were held at City Halls enabling families to be involved in their child's learning.

Partners

Glasgow's Concert Halls designed, managed and delivered the project in partnership with MusicHouse. Culture and Sport Glasgow and Glasgow Education Services helped to identify nursery schools to be involved in the project.

Outcomes/Impact

The skills and confidence of the nursery staff and trainee music leaders involved in the project has been greatly enhanced and many of the trainees have gone on to lead other activities within the City Halls learning programme. All the nurseries involved reported that the project had helped to advance the children's musical and other skills a "great deal" and also that the quality of music making within the nursery had improved.

The project attracted a lot of positive attention and as a result, City Halls have embarked on a number of new early years initiatives including Creative Confident Children, a project focusing on emotional literacy in nursery schools working with Glasgow's Community Health and Care Partnerships.
