Beethoven arrived in Vienna to stay for good in his early 20s. He set about establishing himself as a composer, pianist and string player. During this first decade in the Austrian capital, he wrote mostly solo piano music and pieces for strings and keyboard - but this is in no way small scale music! Beethoven was trying to make his mark, so piece after piece pushed the boundaries and catches your attention with some astonishing innovation.
Also, this was the decade in which he was preparing to write his first symphonies – you can hear him testing those possibilities everywhere.
